Completed as first class assignment. with theme "Whats on Top" or something similar. As in what has been on your mind for the past couple of months. I think the Mayan Calender has been a slight undercurrent to be perfectly honest.

We are in the final year of the Mayan Calender, some how equating to doom and gloom, I think the year will pass peacefully for mine (colloquial for imho). This artwork represents the presence of a particular calculation I am sure is on many minds. It is large and powerful, due in part to the various interpretations that have been passed on from generation to generation.

I initially drew the calendar with pencil using one we had hanging on the wall. although I rendered the pencil sketch, this piece functioned better with an over-layed photograph of the object on top (the same as the one I drew)

switching between Mac and my P.C , lots of tonal adjustments were needed for the presentation, this appears quite dark on my monitor and I love it like this, strongest contrast for some time. Unsure how it appears for you.

One of my favourites.

Wow, as soon as I saw the style of the emblems/engravings I was instantly thinking something Mayan or Aztec. Mission accomplished there.
The lighting gives this pic the feeling of a presence of magic, or strong power, with the idea that this artifact has been long, long ago buried deep within the earth or something :XD:

I think that it's the last year of a phase, then the next day, a new phase begins, a new period of 394.3 years known as a B'aktun. It's just one of the organisational periods of "the long count' Mayan calendar, which is measured from the 'creation' date according to the Mayan stories, which would be about 5, 156 years before the present. The longest period on the Mayan calendar is more than 63 million years, so if it did actually mean something, which it doesn't, we would still have quite a long time to go yet.

that is very interesting. I often thought about the concept of entering a new phase of the calendar, and never really bought the worlds end at a particular date..

thank you for your response

You're welcome, Marley. Isn't it crazy how we apply false structures to reality?

Oh I think I saw the same calendar in the South Park Movie :lmao: They sure made them to last back then :happycry:

Yeah, the whole 2012 thing is no going to happen I reckon. Still, it's pretty strange knowing this ancient thing is finally going to expire within our lifetime 8-)
